Major events

Team Up supported the Games Organising Committee (GOC) of the Sololmon Islands 2023 Pacific Games to plan and deliver the Games News Service (GNS). The GNS is a Games-time newsroom producing written and photographic coverage of the Games for publication on the Games website and distribution to international media and other Games stakeholders.

As part of a partnership that ran throughout 2023, Team Up supported GOC in staffing and editorial planning for the GNS, and sent a Games-time team of six experienced Team Up staff and staff from Team Up-supported partner organisations to join the Solomon Islands-based GNS workforce. This cohort was drawn from Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Vanuatu.

The activity was also designed as a capacity building opportunity for Team Up partner staff, allowing them to broaden their sports reporting and writing skills in a newsroom environment, and gain a greater understanding of media operations at a major sports event.

This partnership created several achievements, including:

• The first Pacific Games News Service delivered entirely by Pacific islanders
• Training of a new cohort of Solomon Islands sports reporters and photographers
• Gender-equal coverage of all events
• Unprecedented coverage of Para events

Team Up and the International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport - the world’s largest gathering to advance advance gender equity and equality in sport, physical education and physical activity - formed a partnership for the 8th IWG Woman and Sport World Conference, held in New Zealand in November 2022.

The hybrid design of the conference provided an opportunity for people who were unable to attend in-person to join via a virtual pass, however the costs to attend virtually were still prohibitive to many people in the Pacific region.

Team Up had particular interest in ensuring this event was accessible our partners across the Pacific and so, with permission from the IWG on Women & Sport Secretariat, Team Up hosted three Pacific hubs in Fiji, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Samoa to facilitate attendance of partners based in those countries. Additional virtual passes were purchased for Team Up partners in Tonga and Vanuatu.

A total of 371 people, who would not have otherwise been able to attend the conference in Auckland, were able to attend and benefit from the event as a result of the Pacific hubs. Of these attendees, 81 percent identified as women.

The Pacific hubs facilitated networking as well as attendance at the conference, and hosted a series of country-specific panel discussions to complement the conference’s global content. This successful pilot demonstrated that similarly designed regional hubs can be delivered as alternative conference attendance options in regions where attending large-scale events in person can be challenging due to geographical barriers or socio-economic status.
