Power for change
The League for Life program is currently operating in four Pacific countries: Fiji; Papua New Guinea; Samoa and Tonga.
In Samoa, the program is delivered in partnership between NRL Samoa and Rugby League Samoa.
Overarching Program Goal
Rugby league provides a safe, welcoming and inclusive community space for Pacific island women and girls, and people with a disability.
Program Objectives
- Address barriers to participation for women and girls and people with a disability across all roles (playing and non-playing) in rugby league
- Work with community leaders and experts to reduce incidents of gender-based violence through community engagement and education programs
- Promote positive attitudes towards gender equity and inclusion for all
The two core programs delivered by NRL Samoa staff are:
- League for Life in-school sessions
- Voice Against Violence workshops
League for Life in school is designed to engage children with education in and out of the classroom via communication of positive social messages.
The Voice Against Violence program is aimed at informing and empowering young men and women (aged 16 years or older) to stand up, speak out and take action against domestic violence.
Specifically, the program looks to:
- Change attitudes and behaviours regarding domestic and gender-based violence of men and women
- Educate and engage young men and women via program activities
- Encourage individual behaviour change
- Foster and encourage role models that promote healthy behaviours and gender equality
- Promote messaging around the prevention of violence
